CORRIE STAR CELEBRATES BINGO HALL OPENING
26/01/2006
The new £2.5 million Mecca Club opened in Crewe last week and it was a full house for the opening ceremony of the bingo hall.
As many as 800 people are believed to have gone through the doors on the first night at the Phoenix Leisure Park venue, the Crewe Chronicle reports.
Those who turned up did not regret it either. The champagne was flowing as bingo players were entertained by a celebrity appearance from Coronation Street's Les Battersby and an Elvis impersonator.
The growing popularity of bingo in the UK was confirmed by the long queue of people who signed up to the club, in addition to the many existing Mecca members who came along.
Andrea Heron, a 36-year-old teaching assistant, told the paper: "I think it's great. I never thought we'd get one in Crewe and I was made up when I heard it was coming. It is definitely better than other bingo halls I've been in."
