Islington's Mecca Bingo Online club, in Essex Road, hosted regulars for the last time on Sunday, when many waved a tearful goodbye to their beloved bingo base.
"It was really sad and it was even more sad for the elderly people, because they've been going there for 30 years. They were crying. It's devastating," said Liz Grimsley, 48, according to the Islington Gazette.
The club's owner, Rank, has reportedly blamed the predicted impact of the smoking ban, due to be introduced over the summer, as the reason that the club had to close. This, along with the taxes imposed on bingo, make it a pricey venture.
It is for reasons such as these that the Bingo Association earlier this month launched a campaign to alert the government to the struggle faced by the numbers game.
Despite the lack of local bingo, players will still be able to enjoy plenty of bingo action by logging onto the internet, where a whole bingo world awaits.
