BLIND MAN'S CHUFFED
04/01/2006

A former soldier has battled against all odds to become Britain's first-ever blind bingo caller.

Ray Peart, a 60-year-old ex-corporal from Gloucestershire, was blinded by a bomb in Belfast more than 30 years ago, but he hasn't let that stop him joining in the bingo fun, the Daily Record reports.

Ray is able to call out the numbers to bingo players by using a special machine that speaks the numbers into a pair of headphones he wears.

The special bingo-calling device was provided for him by the charity REMAP which provides aids to blind people.

Ray now calls out a bingo game once a week at Gloucester's Royal Antideluvian Order of Buffaloes club, something he is delighted to be able to do after the idea came to him during one bingo-playing session.

"After going to the bingo, I said to my wife Claire, 'I could do that if I could get a machine to speak'," he said.
