WELSH BINGO HALLS EXPERIMENT WITH SMOKING BAN
28/02/2006

Two bingo halls in Wales have taken the unusual step of banning smoking from the bingo clubs for one night, the Western Mail reports.

The two clubs in question are Top Ten bingo clubs, situated in Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire.

Tomorrow night, they intend to forbid people from playing bingo whilst puffing away, but just for one night.

It is hoped that such a plan will help to get bingo players used to the total smoking ban which will affect the industry permanently from mid-2007.

Ian Scale, principal public health officer for Pembrokeshire, told the paper: "If we start to tackle the problem now, it should come as less of a shock when the ban comes into force."

There are great concerns over the impact the smoking ban will have on the industry and by taking the decision to impose a one-night ban, the two Top Ten clubs are showing the initiative to start planning sooner rather than later.
