BINGO A PASSED TIME PASTIME TOO
23/05/2006

A report in the Yorkshire Post has revealed that as far back as the post-war 1940s, both Tories and socialists made lots of money from hosting bingo games to satisfy the national craving for the popular pastime.

Not only did the game finance local election agents, who relied on money from bingo, but it also helped areas get financial boosts.

"Some constituencies made three or four thousand pounds a year – worth 20 to 30 times more today. So we are talking millions," said Professor Keith Laybourn, of Huddersfield University, according to the Yorkshire Post.

Nowadays, the game is obviously further developed, with online bingo providing enthusiasts with greater opportunities and chances to win big and hit the bingo jackpot.

Professor Laybourn has been awarded a grant to produce a research project and later a book about gambling and gaming, so UK online bingo fans will soon be able to learn more about the roots of their obsession.
