Falling revenues since the smoking ban in April have seen many bingo halls struggle, with five bingo clubs closing down altogether in that time, the Scotsman reports.
Chairman of the Bingo Association, Sir Peter Fry, wants the rebate to come from the VAT that bingo operators must pay, which he feels is unfair as the same rules to not apply for bookmakers and lottery ticket vendors.
A Bingo Association spokesman said: "The ban has had a far greater impact on the industry than had been anticipated. This situation has been created by government legislation rather than market forces. The legislators have a responsibility to help with the situation they have created."
Three in five bingo players are believed to smoke, which is double the average amount, meaning that the bingo industry is being affected disproportionately.
