Virgin Games' current online bingo offering is single player, offered as part of their suite of soft games. The move to launch a multi-player online bingo game will see Virgin Bingo form part of the trio of giants, alongside Gala Bingo and Mecca Bingo, all trying to conquer the online bingo market.
It will be interesting to see how these giants shake the online bingo market up, or if in fact they only manage a little mixing. Research amongst experienced online bingo players suggests that their needs are met by the independent spirit of the original, young, standalone sites, where brand recognition comes only from the online bingo world and not other environments.
The perfect chat room ambiance is created by about 60 chatters, anything more is unwieldy and makes it difficult to get to know people, even notice if they are there. One would assume that these giants would have to go for something on a much larger scale, which would probably lose any intimacy and community spirit. How do you make friends and how do you meet up with them again if there are 100 chat rooms to choose from?
Perhaps the arrival of online multi-player Virgin Bingo, Mecca Bingo and Gala Bingo will grow and further carve up the market - those who are in it to socialise will stick with their independents and those who want to play seriously will go with the big trusted names.
It is possible that Virgin Bingo et al might have missed a trick by assuming that people play bingo to win money, rather than to have a good time with people they know.
