The sirens were sounded just as the first number of the afternoon session was being called at the Opera bingo hall in Workington, the Carlisle News & Star reports.
Fortunately, rather than bingo players having to be plucked from the blaze by fearless firefighters, it turned out to be a faulty fire alarm in John Peel House that was to blame.
The manager of the bingo hall, Sean Edwards, told the paper: "There was no fire, but we had to do the decent thing and evacuate everyone.
"We were just about to start and had called the first number on the cash bingo, but nobody missed out and we played the whole session, and everyone has been offered a free session next week to make up for the inconvenience."
