DECEITFUL \'DETECTIVE\' UNCOVERED
18/10/2006

Matthew Brakewell, a 29-year-old former policeman from Smythbridge, Manchester, stole £2,000 from a bingo hall in Rochdale while pretending to be on an undercover investigation, website thisisbradford.co.uk reports.

He was only caught by the police when he tried to repeat the stunt at another bingo club in Bradford 11 days later.

Mr Brakewell approached staff at the Rochdale Mecca bingo claiming to be an undercover detective who wanted to attach tracking devices to bingo cash bags, only to help himself to £2,000.

When he tried to do the same at the Tong Street Gala Bingo club in Bradford, staff were wise to his identity and kept him at the bingo hall until the police arrived.

The website adds that Mr Brakewell attempted to escape and was in possession of a handgun, which turned out to be an imitation.

Nevertheless, the former policeman was remanded back into custody with his sentence due to be delivered next month.
