But now he is the lucky one after scooping the £500 jackpot on the Halifax Evening Courier's bingo game.
He told the newspaper: "It is actually the first time I have played Courier bingo so I have been very lucky.
"I will definitely keep playing and I have every intention of winning it again. Maybe a rollover next time."
In the meantime, he will share the money with his wife, Florence, who is also a dance enthusiast, as well as ensuring their grandchildren don't go without over the festive period.
