BINGO ROBBER BEHIND BARS
30/11/2006

Matthew Brakewell, 29, from Bridge Bank Road, Smithy Bridge, tried to steal money from a Gala bingo hall in Bradford and a Mecca bingo hall in Rochdale, the Rochdale Observer reports.

Posing as a detective working on a special operation, Brakewell told staff at the Mecca Bingo hall that he needed to safeguard the venue from threat of robbery by attaching tracking devices to cash bags.

But when he was left alone in the club's office he stole £2,000. However, CCTV footage helped police to circulate his image to other bingo halls in the area and a repeat attempt in Bradford the following week led to his eventual arrest.

Judge Linda Sutcliffe, in passing sentence, commented: "It was elaborate and sophisticated in its planning.

"It must have been absolutely terrifying for the people who thought that there was going to be an armed robbery at those premises."
