With no bingo hall in sight, the villagers of Rebollo de Duero clubbed together to buy 60 winning tickets on the seasonal lottery known as 'El Gordo' – The Fat One.
An archaic gambling regulation from 1812 means that single tickets are expensive for the lottery, costing €200 (£134) each.
Instead, syndicates across Spain opt to buy in – and sink or swim – together.
After their €18 million (£12 million) win, the villagers were elated.
"I don't know what everybody is going to do with it," said village mayor Jose Maria Garcia.
"We'll try not to start arguing," he quipped.
This year's Christmas lottery saw the biggest ever payout, totalling over €2 billion (£1.34 billion).
That equates to €50 (£34) for every member of the Spanish population – but the villagers of Rebollo de Duero are enjoying the proceeds on behalf of their less lucky compatriots.
