The King Street venue has been operative as a combined cinema and bingo hall for 35 years and is described by locals as a cornerstone of residents' social activities.
The beautiful art deco building, first designed as an Odeon cinema in 1936 with a massive 1,592 seats, passed through the hands of numerous cinema operators including Virgin, ABC, and finally independent chain Northern Morris before closing its cinema facility last August.
Bingo hall operators have recently announced a spate of closures across the country which are expected to drive local players online for their bingo kicks.
Moreover, many operating firms fear that the smoking ban, to come into force in the UK later this year, will consolidate the trend to close more halls by deterring traditional visitors.
But developments in online bingo mean that the virtual bingo community is growing apace – and this community plays not only several nights a week, but any time of the day or night, seven days a week.
