SMOKE BAN CLAIMS ANOTHER BINGO VICTIM
22/01/2007

The Carlton Bingo hall closed at the weekend in what councillor Bob Spears described as "the end of an era", website Falkirk Today reports.

It is believed that the smoking ban north of the border is largely to blame for a decline in the number of people playing at the venue.

A Carlton Bingo spokesman told Falkirk Today: "Over the last few months Carlton has tried various ways to make the venue more profitable. Unfortunately, the venue is no longer a viable business and we have reluctantly taken the decision to close.

"A significant number of our players were smokers and that meant those players who previously spent their entire evening in the bingo, were arriving later, leaving earlier and popping out at the breaks as a result of the smoking restrictions."

The latest bingo hall closure is, however, expected to boost online bingo, where players can enjoy a game at any time of day from the luxury of their own home.
