As adults become increasingly aware of the mental benefits associated with the game, online bingo has soared in popularity over the past few years, from ten bingo sites on the internet in the year 2000 to more than one hundred in 2006.
The latest study, undertaken by the website Best-online-bingo, revealed that the most popular reason cited for elderly players to take up the game was that it helps to maintain memory skills.
Improved concentration was the second most popular reason, while bingo players also cited the social nature of the game as a motivation.
The findings serve to confirm the conclusions of several academic studies into the benefits of playing bingo.
In their 2001 work, The Graying of America, Donald H Causler and Barry C Kausler stated that "playing bingo, long considered to be simply a recreational pastime for senior citizens, may actually train elderly players to improve their attentional skills".
Furthermore, a 2002 study by the University of Southampton's Centre for Visual Cognition found that bingo can advance the speed and precision of short-term memory and aids in countering some ageing effects.
