PETITION PLANNED FOR BINGO HELP
19/02/2007

Bingo clubs have to pay VAT on money that is waged, unlike other areas of the gaming industry. Coupled with the smoking ban north of the border, it is placing considerable strain on the livelihood of bingo halls.

Mike Lowe, operations manager at Premier Bingo, has therefore collected no fewer than 1,400 signatures to present to the Scottish Parliament calling for action, Edinburgh Evening News reports.

The petition reads: "We, the undersigned, representing Scotland's bingo players, recognise our clubs have been hit by both the smoking ban and an unfair tax system.

"Therefore, we ask the Scottish Parliament to support bingo in our communities throughout Scotland by calling on the Treasury to cut unfair tax so that bingo is taxed the same as the rest of the gaming industry."

A similar petition is being organised for the UK as a whole, but it is hoped that this other petition will strike a chord with Mr Brown, as Premier Bingo is based in his constituency of Kirkcaldy.
