Some internet gambling services are racking up huge debts for workshy students, according to a report – but if it's three in the morning and you can't focus on that 2000-word essay then a game of online bingo, which won't sting you nastily for all your cash, could help keep you sane.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) has warned that sites such as Betfair feed upon isolated students who can sit in their rooms staking tens and hundreds of pounds without making their problem apparent to anybody outside.
Similarly, the National Union of Students (NUS) believes that many of its members seek quick online winnings as a means of paying off their loan, supplementing their income of cancelling out other debts – often meaning that they lose out even further.
CCCS chairman Malcom Hurlston said in the Times: "Online gaming can feed into the lifestyle of the isolated student. The freedom of being able to gamble online is, in many respects, an aspect of the freedom of students who might be leaving home for the first time.
"Quite often, debt is associated with people who are isolated and not able to tell friends or partners about their problem."
A game of online bingo won't provide you with any nasty surprises and is one game in which you can control your outgoings. Though it won't do your essay for you!
