The imminent smoking bans could
spell bad news for some bingo players, with swathes of halls in danger of
closing – but there's no need to despair, as online bingo can provide the same
thrills from the comfort of your own home.
The proposed partial ban on
smoking would include bingo halls, and fears are rife that this could drive
punters away, spelling disaster for as many as 150 of the nation's bingo
clubs
Sir Peter Fry, chairman of the
Bingo Association, told the Mirror that the industry would support a total ban,
but that a part-ban would have a negative effect on business to drive punters to
places which allow smoking.
He said: "It is not too late for the Government to think again. They have to choose between saving small, local bingo clubs or seeing large numbers disappear.
"Why is the Government being so pathetic? Is it because it feels tobacco duty is more important?"
Broadly, the partial smoking ban will see the practice banned in pubs and clubs which serve food, while private members clubs with no food will not be included.
