BINGO COULD SAVE STRUGGLING CLUBS
23/11/2005

More and more working mens' clubs in Wales are finding themselves in financial difficulties and will struggle to survive, according to the South Wales Echo.

The newspaper reports that a survey of 150 clubs and institutes from December last year revealed that bar sales had fallen by a third since 1993, with the average operating surplus of clubs falling from £88.47 in 2002 to £17.12.

Hugh Jones, a partner at Pontypridd accountants RH Jeffs & Rowe, commented: "They need new impetus, innovation from the committees if they are to excite young people."

One such innovation could be to introduce more bingo to the clubs.

Viv Treherne, the ex-secretary of Senghenydd & Abertridwr Conservative Club which closed in October, hopes his old club could still be saved.

"People came to bingo even though the top prize was just £15 simply because it was a chance to get out of the house and mix with people they'd grown up with, catch up with a chat. It reinforced a sense of community," he said.

If all else fails, then the lucrative rewards of online bingo could prove a suitable alternative.
