There's no need to smell a rat – what follows is a genuine means used by a forthcoming bingo social in the Philippines to attract punters.

At the event – to be held on December 3rd in the town of Lucban - farmers can receive a bingo card by bringing five rat tails along with them, as an incentive to reduce numbers of the pesky rodents.

The province of Quezon, in which Lucban is located, has historically suffered badly from rat infestation, which can have a debilitating effect on rice fields and vegetable plots.

It is hoped that the lure of the chance to pick up some lucky numbers – and a wad of cash – will spur the farmers on to eliminating the rats and thus giving their own crops, and the local economy as a whole, a massive boost.

They're not playing online bingo, but you can – and you won't have to cut the tail off a rat in order to do it.
