GOVERNMENT RELAXES BINGO HALL RULES
26/06/2008
The government has said it will relax rules for
bingo halls, allowing the installation of up to eight slot machines, in a bid to boost the industry.
Around 100 halls have closed since 2004, leaving around 600 across the country.
Sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe said that the maximum number of machines, with a £500 maximum jackpot, would be raised from the current limit of four.
"The machines will provide much needed help to struggling clubs. The clubs play a crucial role in many communities," he said.
Some ministers had called for tax breaks to be used instead of changing the rule, which was only introduced in September 2007.
The industry has suffered a blow in the last few years with the reduction of slot machines, the economic climate and the smoking ban driving attendance figures down.
