BINGO CALLER RETIRES AFTER MORE THAN 30 YEARS AT SAME HALL
12/01/2009
A
bingo caller from Somerset is to retire after working at the same club for more than 30 years.
Rose Walford has worked at the
Mecca Bingo hall in Bridgwater, Somerset, since she was 25.
The Bridgwater Mercury reports that Ms Walford was given an "emotional send-off" by the other staff at the hall, receiving fruit baskets and flowers as parting gifts.
Much has changed in the bingo industry since Ms Walford became a caller.
Online bingo sites are now extremely popular among gamers and traditional bingo halls often face difficulties attracting people.
Ms Walford told the newspaper: "The industry has changed so much in the 34 years I have been here. We used to use the ball machines but now a computer does it all."
She commented that though her job was made easier by such technology, the "atmosphere had changed".
In related news, a bingo hall in Kent has recently closed, with the loss of 14 jobs.
The Regent Bingo hall was converted into a venue in the 1960s, reports Bingo News.
