The rise of online bingo came about as a result of the game's close relationship with technology, it has been claimed.
Stephen Baldwin, communications manager at UK bingo trade body The Bingo Association, explains that the internet is not the only place where technology plays a part in the delivery of the game of chance.
Even in land-based clubs, he notes that electronic ticket minders and touchscreen handsets are among the gadgets and gizmos that help bingo players to enjoy their favourite pastime.
"Bingo has always been fairly closely aligned to technology - hence moving online, linked online bingo and mobile phones," Mr Baldwin comments.
"Technology has always been fairly to the forefront of bingo," he adds, noting that mobile bingo is the latest digital format to show signs of growth.
He points out that this contrasts with the traditional view held by many people that bingo is a game primarily played using a pen and paper.
